Some reviewers claim that they will get your sluggish computer back up to speed quickly. Others say that they are completely unnecessary, and can even cause your system to malfunction or crash.

What a registry cleaner does is scan the computer registry for invalid or corrupt files and unused or outdated drivers, look for missing file associations and remove any problems it encounters. In theory, you will have a quicker loading computer, with programs running faster and smoother. Is this really true, and can these types of programs fulfill their promises? Do they do all this automatically, or do they give you the option of choosing the right actions?

With one reviewer even calling registry cleaners ’snake oil, ‘ one has to wonder about using them. There are some experts who insist that using a cleaner is dangerous. Because it can isolate or remove files that are actually needed to run the operating system or programs, it can cause crashes or program malfunctions. The best result they can foresee is the possible gain of a bit of space, and perhaps a little quicker start up. However, the possible disk space gain is quite irrelevant with the huge disk space on our modern computers.

Many registry cleaners offer a free trial by way of a system scan. This is to induce you to buy the program to clean up the hundreds of errors found. Once you purchase it and run it, you just may find your computer speedier. However, you also may find it functions even less optimally that before. The program may have removed some necessary and critical entries, causing your new problems. In any case, you may even notice it runs slower, because the registry deletions have fragmented it.

Keeping your registry clean, program developers claim, will require scheduled maintenance. What they don’t say is that a few orphaned files or extra entries in the registry of your computer will not noticeably affect its functioning. You may even notice that the cleaner has marked and isolated needed files, labeled them as bad, and made them dysfunctional or removed them.

Experts advise that if you feel the need to fix your registry, you should do it manually. If you don’t have the skill, then either leave it alone or hire an expert to do it for you. Do not rely on registry cleaners that may have received some good reviews, but have little in the way of real hard data to back up their claims.

Instead, to avoid problems, install only licensed programs to your system, and keep them up to date. Back up your critical data regularly. Be very cautious about installing and uninstalling trial or beta software programs. Always have a good anti-virus and malaware system running, and keep its files updated. Regularly defragment your system and delete temporary files. Just these simple stems will keep your system cleaner, and you won’t need to consider the dilemma of whether or not to use registry cleaners.

For those of you using Windows XP start off by clicking the Start button, clicking on the Control Panel icon and clicking on the Add or Remove Programs. Now just wait a little while since the list has to be created (basically the mor eprograms on your computer the longer it will take to populate). All that’s left to do now is to just remove the programs that you don’t need. To do this, just click on the program that you don’t need and selecting Change/Remove and following through with the rest of the removal process.

If you are Windows Vista user, click Start, go to Control Panel and make sure that at the top of the window that you have “Classic View” selected. Double click on the Programs and Features button (wait a few seconds for your programs to come up) and just select the programs that you don’t need and select Uninstall to remove them. Remember to only remove programs if you what they are and if you know that you don’t need them.

What is a registry cleaner and why is there such a big hype about them when people are talking about trying to make their computers faster? A registry is an area on your computer that is like a database that stores all of the configurations for your computers operating system and all of the programs and applications that are on your computer. Making your computer faster requires that you spend some working on different parts of your computer to make it more efficient like tweaking the operating system and cleaning out parts of the computer. Using a registry cleaner is like having a messy desk to clean and you are focusing on cleaning out one drawer. Sure that one drawer will be really neat and organized but the overall picture (the desk in this case) will still be messy and inefficient to use.

Should you stop using registry clearers? No. The registry is one of the areas of your computer that needs to be cleaned and you should still use a registry cleaner to clean it out. I just don’t suggest paying for a registry cleaner since there are some really good free ones out there. The main one that I use and highly recommend is called Ccleaner. If you are interested in it, just do a Google search for it. Just download the program and install it. Once installed, on the left hand side click on Registry and click on Scan for issues. It will now scan your computer to see where the errors are and then you will be able to remove the errors that are on your registry. Also Ccleaner doubles as a great general all purpose cleaner for your computer. Just click on Run Cleaner on the home screen and it will clean out your temporary internet files, cookies, your history and other pieces of data that are not needed anymore.

If you want to make your slow computer faster, then tuning your virtual memory would be a great place to start. You see, your hard drive is that place that your computer stores files like videos, picture etc… Your RAM on the other hand is the place that your computer’s programs work in. Its basically like a temporary working area. It’s a great system, but when your RAM gets full your computer has two choices: it can either tell you that you cannot open any more programs or it can find a new place to be used as the temporary working place. This is where virtual memory comes into play. Virutal memory is space on your computers hard drive that will be used the same way that your computer uses RAM

It then has a choice: either tell you that you cannot open any more programs or find a new place to use as its temporary work place. This new place is called virtual memory and is located on your hard drive. The name for the space on your hard drive that the virtual memory occupies is called a Paging File. If you want your slow computer to run a bit quicker all you have to do is to tune your computer Paging File. Here’s how to do it:

If you are a Windows XP user just click Start and right click My Computer and now select Properties. Now click on the Advanced tab and then under the area that says “Performance” just click on the Settings icon. A new window should appear. Just click on the Advanced tab at the top of the window and then under the Virtual Memory section, click on Change. Just make sure to look under where it says “Drive [Volume Label]” and make sure that your C: is highlighted. Now just look under Page file size for selected drive and select Custom Size.

Where it says “Total page file size for all drives section” look at the amount that says Recommended. What ever number it says is recommended, type that into both boxes where it says Initial Size and Maximum Size. Click Set and then Ok. Then Click Apply on the next window and OK.

For those of you using Windows Vista, just click Start, select Control Panel and on the left hand side make sure Classic View is selected. Now double click on the System icon. Now look on the left side of the window and click on the Advanced System Settings. Select the Advanced tab at the top of the window and then under the section that says Performance select Settings. A new window should appear. Just click on the Advanced tab at the top of the screen and under the section that says “Virtual Memory” select Change. Now uncheck the box that says “Automatically manage paging file size for all drivers” and look in the area where it says “Drive [Volume Label]” to make sure that C: is selected. Now look under Page file size for selected drive and select Custom Size and where it says “Total page file size for all drives section” take not of the amount that says “Recommended” as you will be using this number. Now take whatever number it says is recommended and type that into both boxes that say “Initial Size” and “Maximum Size”. To finish just click on Set, then Ok and for the next window just click on Apply and then OK.
